We’ve talked about lead magnets in a previous article, but to recap in a nutshell: a lead magnet is a free offer (ebook, checklist, coupon, etc.) that you give people in exchange for their email address. It’s the bait to grow your email list with relevant prospects.
So mastering email marketing actually starts before the first email – it starts with attracting the right people onto your list: - Make sure your lead magnet is closely related to whatever you eventually want to sell. If you offer a free “Social Media Tips” PDF but you ultimately sell a graphic design service, those leads might not convert well, because their interest (social media) isn’t directly aligned with your product (design). A better aligned magnet for a design service might be “Branding 101 Checklist” or something design-related, so the people who sign up are likely to be interested in your design services too. - Ensure your sign-up process is smooth. Use a landing page with a clear call-to-action to get the freebie. Once they submit, show a thank you message or page that tells them to check their email (if you’re delivering via email). - Deliver the lead magnet immediately via email. This first email sets the tone. It should contain the goods (attachment or download link) and a friendly welcome/thank you message. This is also a good time to introduce yourself briefly – “Hey, I’m Jane, the founder of XYZ. I’m excited you grabbed this, and I think you’ll find it super useful. Keep an eye on your inbox because over the next few days, I’ll send more tips on [topic].”
That initial value delivery builds trust: you made a promise (“get this free thing”) and you fulfilled it right away. Now the subscriber is happy – they got something useful and they know checking your emails is worth their while.
Bonus tip: If your lead magnet is something like a PDF or guide, consider adding a section in it that points to next steps or other resources (even your product, subtly). For example, at the end of an ebook: “Next Steps: Now that you’ve learned X, if you need help implementing it, I’m here for you – check out [your product/service] or hit reply with your questions.” Some people might convert just from that.
