Your funnel’s success heavily depends on the very top: how you attract people into it. Typically, this means you need something interesting to grab their attention and get them “in the door.” Often, that’s a lead magnet (free resource) or a very enticing offer/piece of content.
If you did the example above, you’d identify what freebie or content will speak to your audience’s needs (like the Gardening cheat sheet). Here’s what to consider: - If you’re using a lead magnet (free guide, checklist, trial, etc.), make sure it’s highly relevant to what you eventually want to sell. The funnel should attract people who are likely to want your paid offer. For instance, offering a “Free Gardening 101 Cheat Sheet” is relevant to selling a gardening course. Offering “Free Cookie Recipes” would not be relevant and would attract the wrong crowd for that course. - If you’re using content like blog articles or videos to bring people in, pick topics that your target customers would search for or be interested in, and that naturally tie into your product. For example, a blog post titled “5 Mistakes New Gardeners Make” might draw in new gardeners (who are perfect for your beginner gardening course funnel). - Or if you plan to use ads directly, the ad will be offering the lead magnet or whatever your entry offer is. Ensure your ad’s messaging and your entry offer are aligned.
Let’s assume you’re going with the common approach of a free lead magnet + email capture (because that’s one of the simplest funnels to start with): - Create the lead magnet (if you haven’t already). If you need ideas on what makes a good one, consider something like a short PDF guide, a checklist, a template, a short video training, etc. We covered a lot of ideas in the previous article on lead magnets. - Give it a catchy title and emphasize the benefit. Example: not just “Gardening Tips” but “Garden Jumpstart Kit: 7 Quick Tips to Grow Your First Veggies Successfully”. - Pro tip: Don’t overthink it to the point of delaying launch. Your first funnel’s lead magnet doesn’t have to be 100% perfect. It should be valuable, yes, but you can revise or upgrade it later. The important thing is to have something that attracts your target audience.
By the end of this step, you should have your initial “hook” – that offer or content piece that will get people into your funnel. Now we build the mechanism to deliver it.
