3. Address the Reader’s Pain Points or Fears

Fear can be a strong motivator, and I don’t mean scare tactics or dishonesty. I mean acknowledging what your reader might be worried about or struggling with, and using that in the headline to promise relief.

Examples: - “Never Miss a Deadline Again: Time Management for Procrastinators” – addresses fear of missing deadlines and offers a solution. - “Is Your Website Driving Customers Away? 5 Design Mistakes to Avoid” – taps into the worry “oh no, is my site turning people off?” and promises to reveal mistakes to fix.

Another angle is using negative wording like “Don’t” or “Stop.” For example, “Why Your Diet Isn’t Working – 3 Mistakes to Stop Making” or “Don’t Buy a Used Car Until You Read This.” These can create urgency and pique interest because they start with a warning or challenge.

However, balance negativity. If every headline of yours is “You’re doing X wrong” it might turn people off over time. Use this technique when appropriate but not as your only style.
